1. Know what you stand for

First place to start is knowing what you want to stand for. Are you wanting to be bold? Nurturing? Fun and Carefree? The colours that you choose for your branding colour are going to be the first thing that people will generally get to see of you. First impressions really do count.

2. What are the colours

A primary colour (red, blue & yellow) are colours that can be used to make the other colours by mixing them. Secondary colours are the result of the mixing of two primary colours (green, orange, purple) and tertiary colours are made by combining primary and secondary (red-orange, yellow-orange, yellow-green, blue-green, blue-violet, and red-violet).

3. Colours have meaning

You might look at a picture and it evokes a strong reaction in you – next time this happens think about what it is that might be causing this. Is it what is in the picture or could it be the colours used? Colours are used everyday to help you decide everything from what direction to go (stop signs for example) to how you feel about a product (looking for environmentally friendly product generally earthy tones like are green, blue or brown)

4. The next step…

Do some research… Urgh I know right! But it really is the best way to move forward with a branding colour you are likely to stick with for years to come. A couple things you can try is to google your competitors and see what they are doing with their branding. Now trust me, this can send you down a rabbit hole and you could get lost for days. Choose 3-5 and delve slightly further than the logo. Check out their online presence (website, social media etc) just a quick once over and make note of how you feel when you see their logo, colour scheme etc then move on to the next one.

5. So you know what you stand for and what the colours mean…

Take a deep breath and choose your colours (we suggest 3 – 5 colours that range from light to dark). Remember the colours are going to be used for all manner of marketing and branding. What do they mean to you. Write it all down. Knowing all these things is what will help you make simple decisions when you are creating content for your website, social media and printed materials. Sometimes you are going to want to use a big bold colour to make a statement or use that bold colour as an accent on a white page as a subtle nod to who you are.
