Martin:             Hello and welcome to this fortnight’s episode of The Online Concept Podcast. I’m your host Martin Mills. And in this week’s episode we’re going to talk about getting started with websites, the importance of websites in the modern marketing scenarios. So in this episode we’re going to look at topics such as what is a website, do I need a website and the various types of websites. So let’s dive right in and get started with what is a website.

Martin:             So what is a website? It is and should always be the centrepiece of your online marketing platform. So all roads should lead to your website and we’ll cover off a little bit more of that one in do I need a website, but why you need a website and things like that. So the importance of a website. A website is a platform that you own, that you control and that you have the final say in. So anytime you want to market your business and you want to make sure that the content and control the content that is getting out there, that is why a website is important to a business.

Martin:             So where does your website sit in the current marketing world? So it should sit right at the middle if you think of it like a spoken hub system. So if you think of it, even like Australia Post, for example, with Australia Post, everything gets delivered to a central point. So you go down to the postbox, you put your letter in the postbox, somebody comes around, picks that up and delivers it to a local hub and then is then transmitted to probably a state hub and then interstate and things like that as required. Then when it gets to the other end, it then goes back through the process until it’s delivered to your mailbox.

Martin:             So a website it’s kind of the same thing. So if you’ve got social media, you know Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and you want to put an article on those, then link it back to your website because you own and you control the website at the centre of your marketing system. So this means you can do things like build sales funnels and all those sorts of things into your website and then direct all of the traffic from your social media platforms and your articles online back to there.

Martin:             So there are a couple of key things that you need for a website. And so the anatomy of a website typically is a domain, some website hosting, the website and an SSL certificate. So if you want to better understand those, if you think of it as you think of it like your house, so your house needs a block of land to sit on. And that is what website hosting is. It’s a platform that stores your website and shows it to members of the public that come along and want to view it. So from there the website is obviously the house and that contains all of your information and products and services about your company, ways for people to contact you, so on and so forth.

Martin:             The domain is just like you have a postal address for your house, it’s the address that people find your website at. And in the last couple of years it’s become critical that you need to have an SSL certificate on your website. And an SSL certificate is about securing your website and keeping it safe. So I like to think of the SSL as the guard dog or the six-foot fence that you might have around that house. So we are actually going to, in future podcasts, we’re going to cover off more about domains and hosting and websites and SSLs. So I’m not going to go into it in any real depth here.

Martin:             So moving onto the next topic of, do you need a website? So do you need a website? Well, yes and no. So you can get away with using platforms such as social media, Facebook, things like that for your business and having all roads lead back there. But it is not a fairly effective way of doing it. So do you need a website? Well, yes, you want to have a website because you want it to be the centre of your marketing platform. And the reason you want to do that is you own your website, as I mentioned previously, but you don’t own Facebook, you don’t own LinkedIn, you don’t own Instagram. If you do, I’d love to interview you for this podcast, but obviously you don’t own those platforms. So if something was to happen to those platforms tomorrow, say for example, I know it’s highly unlikely, but Facebook goes out of business tomorrow, you lose everything, all of the people, all the followers, all your posts, they’re gone. So at least when you direct everybody back to your own website, you own everything that goes back there.

Martin:             So like I said, your website should be your central point of marketing. And the reason we want that is a term called owning the lead. So somebody comes along to your Facebook, they read an article and they click on a link to go back to your website where you offer them something free, such as a checklist or a worksheet in exchange for their email address. Because they’ve signed up on your platforms so on your website, you own the lead, you own their details and you can add them to your list. So by adding them to your list, you can then follow them up on specific marketing techniques and topics and things like that moving forward and into the future. Effectively every time you send them an email, it’s another touch point and you’re getting closer to converting that visitor into a sale.

Martin:             All right, so let’s look at the types of websites and we’re not going to cover them in depth because there’s literally hundreds of them. And over the next few fortnights you’re going to learn a lot more about websites anyway. So the types of websites, you’ve got a static website, so static website is a website that may be built straight out of HTML. The content and data on it doesn’t change very often. There’s nothing flashy or moving or anything like that to worry too much about. It’s just a straight informational site that’s static.

Martin:             So from there, the next type of website we’ve got is a dynamic website, which as you can imagine, is the complete opposite to a static website. In that the content changes regularly. The website is possibly built on a platform such as WordPress or Joomla or any number of platforms similar to that, and it’s probably driven by a database full of information that changes on a regular basis. A dynamic website might contain a blog, it might contain a shop, it might contain an e-learning facility or any of those sorts of things. Martin: The next one we’ve got is basically a landing page or a funnel, so these are very specialised small websites that focus on one particular topic with the aim of a conversion in the end. So there are a lot of these floating around and you’ve probably been caught by them hundreds of times when you’ve clicked a link on social media where you go to a page, it talks about how wonderful this course is. You see some testimonials from people and you get the, if you buy it now, you’re only going to pay $29 99 cents as opposed to $399. And then obviously you go, great, that sounds like a good deal. You buy it and then they upsell the heck out of you for the next month via email, via things inside the course that you’ve just bought and so on and so forth.

Martin:             And finally, the other main type is an application-based websites. So this would be things like if you’ve ever gone to Main Roads to renew your licence or to pay your registration. Those sorts of things are built around an application. So the application would be to renew your licence. The website is literally just the face plate for that. So these are normally more focused around entrepreneurs who are bringing something new to the marketplace as a disruptor or bigger business where they may or may not have a platform such as, that needs that sort of level of things.

Martin:             So things you can use. Most of these things can be built out of any four, any of those. E-learning, so that’s electronic learning where you can have a bunch of students who learn something from a video-based course or a text-based course. E-commerce, so that’s where you can sell your products and services directly on your website. An auction site just like eBay, you can build your own auction site. It’s not that easy to run, but hey you can certainly tackle that if you feel like that’s the sort of thing you want to do. A straight business site and of course, a not-for-profit websites, which those two are very similar, but they basically contain information about the business or the organisation and make that available to the public.

Martin:             So then you’ve got the other key designation between websites are self-hosted sites. So this is where you might build a site such as a static site out of HTML, dynamic site out of WordPress or Joomla or something like that. And then you’ve got online websites, which is where you might use a platform such as Wix or Squarespace or any number of platforms that just keep popping up online that you can use for those. And we’re going to cover a bit more about those in a future podcast.
